Our HRC and AKC Hunt Test program is designed to produce elite-caliber dogs that not only perform but, excel under pressure in competition. Team HDR, led by head trainer Bill Schaefer, has over fifteen years of experience training, handling, and titling retrievers at all levels, from beginner hunt tests to national-caliber events.
We seek precision through our intense focus on consistency, communication, and teamwork, developing retrievers that are both skilled hunting companions and top-tier competitors. Our consistently-high pass percentages speak volumes, with numerous titled dogs achieving success across the country.
HRC Hunt Testing
We handle dogs through all levels of the Hunting Retriever Club (HRC) program
Started (SHR - Started Hunting Retriever) Foundational test work with single marks on land and water focusing on basic control and desire
Seasoned (HR - Hunting Retriever) Expands into doubles, simple blinds, and diversions
Finished (HRCH - Hunting Retriever Champion) Championship HRC level requirements emphasizing precision, complex marking and blind retrieves in advanced hunting scenarios
HRC Grand
For those pursuing the most coveted hunt test achievement, we train and campaign retrievers to earn the HRC Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH) title, a true testament to teamwork, skill, and commitment
AKC Hunt Testing
We also handle dogs in the American Kennel Club (AKC) hunt test system
Junior (JH - Junior Hunter) Foundational test work with single marks on land and water focusing on basic control and desire
Senior (SH - Senior Hunter) Expands into doubles, simple blinds, and honoring
Master (MH - Master Hunter) Championship AKC level requirements emphasizing precision, complex marking and blind retrieves in advanced hunting scenarios
AKC Master National
Our program also develops and handles dogs who have qualified on an annual basis to compete at the AKC Master National level, the highest achievement for consistent excellence in performance.
