Professional Hunt Test Handling
Our HRC and AKC Hunt Test programs are designed to produce dogs that not only perform in the field but excel under pressure in competition. Team HDR, led by head trainer Bill Schaefer, has decades of experience training, handling, and titling retrievers at all levels, from beginner hunt tests to national-caliber events.
We focus on precision, consistency, and teamwork, developing retrievers that are both skilled hunting companions and top-tier competitors. Our event record speaks for itself, with numerous titled dogs achieving success across the country.
HRC Hunt Testing
We train and handle dogs through all levels of the Hunting Retriever Club (HRC) program.
Started (SHR) — Introduces dogs to the world of hunt testing, focusing on control, marking, and enthusiasm.
Seasoned (HR) — Expands marking ability, control, and teamwork on both land and water.
Finished (HRCH) — The highest HRC level, emphasizing precision, complex marks, and blind retrieves in advanced hunting scenarios.
HRC Grand
For those pursuing the ultimate achievement, we prepare and handle retrievers for the HRC Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH) title, a true testament to teamwork, skill, and commitment
AKC Hunt Testing
We also train and campaign retrievers in the American Kennel Club (AKC) Hunt Test system.
Junior Hunter (JH) — Foundational test work with single marks on land and water.
Senior Hunter (SH) — Expands into doubles, simple blinds, and honoring.
Master Hunter (MH) — The pinnacle of AKC hunt testing, showcasing polished handling, advanced marks, and flawless teamwork.
AKC Master National
Our program also develops and handles dogs competing at the AKC Master National Hunter (MNH) level, the highest achievement for consistent excellence in performance.
